Transpose chords into any key, instantly

Transposing means shifting every chord in a song up or down by the same number of half steps so the song sits in a different key — usually to fit a singer's range. BANDANA transposes a whole song with one tap: chords stay aligned over the lyrics, slash chords move both the chord and the bass note, and the displayed key badge updates so nobody has to do the math on stage.

How does the chord transposer work?

Open any song in your band's library where you've already added lyrics and chords, and toggle the transpose controls. Every chord shifts together, up or down, wrapping through a full twelve semitones in each direction so you can reach any key from any starting point.

    • Chords stay locked in position above the right syllable
    • Slash chords like D/F# transpose the chord and the bass note independently and correctly
    • The key badge updates live once a root key is set

Export the chart as a PDF in whatever key you just transposed to.

Does BANDANA detect the key of a song automatically?

Yes. When a song has at least two distinct chords, BANDANA matches them against diatonic patterns and suggests the key — during manual editing and after an import. You can always override it.

How do I get lyrics and chords into a song?

Paste text straight in, upload a file, or link to a public site, like Ultimate Guitar. Extracted content saves immediately, so you never lose an import to a mis-tap. From there you can edit chords by tapping the chord row directly above the lyric.

    • Paste text, upload a file, or link to a site to enable AI extraction
    • Auto-save after extraction — no unsaved-changes trap
    • Tap a chord to edit it in place, while edits auto-save as you work

Can I read lyrics hands-free while playing?

Yes. Any read-only view of a song — the song page, the full-screen lyrics view, and public share links — has an auto-scroll bar under the lyrics. Hit play and the chords and lyrics roll past at whatever speed you set, so your hands stay on the instrument.

Can I share a transposed song outside my band?

Yes. Every song has a share link that opens a public, read-only page where the viewer can transpose for themselves without touching your stored version — and auto-scroll it at their own pace — useful for a sub learning the tune in the key you actually play it in. You can also save transposed chords so they override the original key.

      Common questions

Is there a free online chord transposer?
Yes. BANDANA transposes chords for free. Create a band, add a song with chords over lyrics, and transpose it into any key.
Does BANDANA scroll lyrics for me while I play?
Yes. Read-only song views include an auto-scroll play/pause button and a speed slider. It pauses the moment you scroll by hand and remembers your speed for the next song.
      Does it handle slash chords?
Yes. Slash chords such as G/B transpose both parts — the root chord and the bass note move together, so voice leading stays intact.
Can I print the transposed version?
Yes. The PDF export renders chords above lyrics in the key currently displayed, so you print what you are actually playing.
Does transposing change the song for the rest of the band?
Transposing on a public shared song page is local to the viewer. Changing the stored key in your band's library updates it for everyone.
